Sometimes the Universe provides in unexpected ways

for example - I picked up the book I had ordered from our local bookstore - because we have a storm coming - I had planned on having the book to read and knitting to do and since we probably won't be going out to get our lobster in the storm tomorrow I bought shrimp to make scampi for dinner tomorrow. But I guess the universe decided I wouldn't stop and enjoy the book and the knitting so it put a bump in the frozen ground for me to trip over -- Ouch -- Let's just say I am going to have a spectacular bruise on my shin and I am afraid to look and see what is causing some really impressive twinges....

This is going to be a spectacular year I know - Heck - I am getting all the crud out early in the year :D Oops - I just realized that may be a cryptic remark if you don't know that I had the stomach flu from hell last week -- I did about 2 miles for the 100 miles by April Fools Day just running from my chair in the living room to the bathroom with bodily fluids coming from one side or the other - not fun. So you see -- things have to look up after the past couple of weeks heheheh

Things only a Bonacker would know!

I got this in an email from another Bonacker today and laughed hysterically at it - hopefully non-bonackers will think it is amusing at least

LONG ISLAND.... You can use the back roads to get home quicker than the average tourist, but you don't know the names of any of the streets...it is all intuition.

You live in the shadow of the greatest city in the world, but you almost never go there.

You don't live in Long Island. You live ON Long Island. You don't live in the Hamptons... you are from Amagansett, East Hampton, Montauk, Springs or Wainscott. You say Bonac Crick for Creek.

You know how many lanes go over the Shinnecock Canal and where the speed traps/state troopers hang near there. You don't go to Manhattan, you go to "The City." You never realize you have an accent till you leave. Everything north of the Bronx is "upstate." New Jersey sucks.

When you're away from Long Island, you love it and when you're there, you don't. You are proud you are from Springs. You think if you're not from Long Island or NYC, you're not really from New York. You know people from the Oak View Trailer Park.

At some point in your life you've gone clamming. Either your parents or your grandparents lived in the city. You'd pay $11.50 for a movie. You ran outta toilet paper and bought it at Hess, because it was the only thing open.

Your distant future might involve the state of Florida and living in a trailer does not sound crazy. You can correctly pronounce places like Hauppauge, Wantagh, Massapequa, Amagansett, Napeague. You can also pronounce Schenck's.

You know the location of 3 malls and 4 McDonalds and thirty six 7-11's on Long Island. You know where the best hunting, clamming and fishing spots are. You can navigate through Northwest with your eyes closed.

You never, ever want to "change at Jamaica..." You've missed that "Drunk Train," the 2:42 out of Penn and had the dreaded wait until 5:30. You have or someone you know has fallen asleep on the LIRR and ended up in one of these three places; Babylon, Speonk or Montauk.

No, you don't want mustard on that burger!! You know what a Villa Combo is. You've had a seagull or goose crap on your car. You've tried to find the Amityville Horror house, at least once. You've been to the Radar Tower in Montauk and been spooked.

You went to an elementary school that promoted dodge ball as the number 1 game among children 5-13.

You know what a John Burger is and have eaten food at either Mc Kendry's or Wolfies, and regretted it in the morning. You know what a Morning After is from One Stop. You can name the brothers that own Fierro's and have a charge/house account there.

Quick! Who's your county Executive? Don't know do you? But you can name the local fire chief can't you?

You've never taken an MTA bus. The Long Island Expressway isn't really as bad as everybody thinks. You don't associate Fire Island with gay men. You don't cross the Shinnecock Canal unless you have to from Memorial Day to Labor Day...EVER! You know which parts of the Godfather were filmed on Long Island. You go to Riverhead to go shopping, cause it's cheaper.

You know where the movie stars live, but really don't care.

You've paid a $20 cover charge to get into a bar, but got nothing for it. You've paid $12 for a drink in the village, but been too drunk to care. You've gotten into the Talkhouse free, at least once. You've been pulled over by the Sag Harbor Police Department and think they are all pricks.

Billy Joel said it best, " either you date a rich girl from the North Shore, or a cool girl from the South Shore." You've always liked Billy Joel and you own several of his "records."

You don't really see what the big deal is about the Hamptons. You have gotten smashed at the Boardy Barn. You know at least 5 local cops by name, cause they pull you over and then laugh. You are related to in someway to a Lester, King or Bennett. (some of us are related to all three groups - rho)

When people ask "where are you from?" you answer Long Guy- Land and automatically assume everyone in the world knows that answer means New York.

The Belt Parkway sucks! You've been stuck in a traffic jam for more than 2 hours (without moving). You know not to turn the corner by the Diner in Southampton in the summer-EVER! You remember when Wainscott had no traffic lights. You can remember when Bridgehampton had the Drive in.

Regular gas -- $2.69-$4.19 and you still pay it to fill up your 2-5 inch lifted truck!!! You know who Kenny is, and don't have to say his last name.

You remember Grumman. You know where Republic Airport is. You have never been to East Hampton Airport, for anything.

You've gotten drunk on the bleachers of some high school. You know what Albert's is. You didn't like the kids from Pierson.

You have said "I love the guys at Mt Fuji" after downing 5 Sake Bombs at Mount Fuji.

You can spout off all the LIRR stops between Babylon and
Montauk, laughing when you say SPEONK!! Paying $50 for a haircut doesn't sound so crazy.

You think the people from Brooklyn are "da wunz dat tawk wit a accent." You knew of Massapequa before the Amy Fisher-Joey Buttafuoco nightmare.

You've partied on a golf course in the middle of the night. You used to party at the bar in the bowling alley.

The first time you heard the term "Long Island Iced Tea" you were somewhere else and you laughed. When you live somewhere else and are astounded to see that people actually stop at yellow lights. When you just sort of presume that wherever you live, they have Schwenks green box Iced Tea.

You can name at least three bands that came from Long Island, including Twisted Sister. When you see two men holding hands...it's normal to you.

No word ends in an ER, just an AH.

You actually remember most of these things and pass this on to other friends from Eastern Long Island-BUB!!!

Another (Silent) Poetry Reading

This was hanging in my home as long as I can remember (and in a bright red frame so everyone would read it as they walked by) - I had a devil of a time finding a copy of it to put here - but it was so worth the search. I had forgotten how much I loved this and how perfectly it puts into words the memories and feelings, and spirit that was the Bonac I remember as a child.

Bonac

I

This is enchanted country, lies under a spell,
Bird-haunted, ocean-haunted--land of youth,
Land of first love, land of death also, perhaps,
And desired return. Sea-tang and honeysuckle
Perfume the air, where the old house looks out
Across mild lowlands, meadows of scrub and pine,
A shell echoing the sea's monotone
That haunts these shores. And here, all summer through,
From dawn to dusk, there will be other music,
Threading the sea's music: at rise of sun,
With jubilation half-awakened birds
Salute his coming again, the lord of life,
His ambulatory footstep over the earth,
Who draws after him all that tide of song-
Salute the oncoming day, while from the edges.
Of darkness, westward, fading voices call,
Night's superseded voices, the whip-poor-will's
Lamentation and farewell. Morning and noon
And afternoon and evening, the singing of birds
Lies on this country like an incantation:
Robin and wren, catbird, phoebe and chat,
Song-sparrow's music-box tune, and from the slender
Arches of inmost shade, the woodland's roof,
Where few winds come, flutelike adagio or
Wild syrinx-cry and high raving of the thrush,
Their clang and piercing pierce the spirit through--
Look off into blue heaven, you shall witness
Angelic motions, the volt and sidewise shift
Of the swallow in mid-air. Enchanted land,
Where time has died; old ocean-haunted land;
Land of first love, where grape and honeysuckle
Tangle their vines, where the beach-plum in spring
Snows all the inland dunes; bird-haunted land,
Where youth still dwells forever, your long day
Draws to its close, bringing for evening-star
Venus, a bud of fire in the pale west,
Bringing dusk and the whip-poor-will again,
And the owl's tremolo and the firefly,
And gradual darkness. Silently the bat,
Over still lawns that listen to the sea,
Weaves the preoccupation of his flight.
The arch of heaven soars upward with all its stars.

II

Summer fades soon here, autumn in this country
Comes early and exalted. Where the wild land,
With its sparse bayberry and huckleberry,
Slopes seaward, where the seaward dunes go down,
Echoing, to the sea; over the beaches,
Over the shore-line stretching east and west,
The ineffable slant light of autumn lingers.
The roof of heaven is higher now, the clouds
That drag, trailing, along the enormous vault
Hang higher, the wide ways are wider now.
Sea-hawks wander the ocean solitudes,
Sea-winds walk there, the waters grow turbulent,
And inland also a new restlessness
Walks the world, remembering something lost,
Seeking something remembered: wheeling wings
And songless woods herald the great departure,
Cattle stray, swallows gather in flocks,
The cloud-travelling moon through gusty cloud
Looks down on the first pilgrims going over,
And hungers in the blood are whispering, "Flee!
Seek otherwhere, here is no lasting home."
Now bird-song fails us, now an older music
Is vibrant in the land--the drowsy cry
Of grasshopper and cricket, earth's low cry
Of sleepy love, her inarticulate cry,
Calling life downward, promising release
From these vague longings, these immortal torments.
The drowsy voice drones on--oh, siren voice:
Aeons of night, millenniums of repose,
Soundless oblivion, divine surcease,
Dark intermingling with the primal darkness,
Oh, not to be, to slough this separate being,
Flow home at last! The alert spirit listens,
Hearing, meanwhile, far off, along the coast,
Rumors of the rhythm of some wakeful thing,
Reverberations, oceanic tremors,
The multitudinous motions of the sea,
With all its waters, all its warring waves

John Hall Wheelock

and to give you one bonus poem that I love too - by himself again.....

Afternoon: Amagansett Beach

The broad beach,
Sea-wind and the sea's irregular rhythm,
Great dunes with their pale grass, and on the beach
Driftwood, tangle of bones, an occasional shell,
Now coarse, now carven and delicate--whorls of time
Stranded in space, deaf ears listening
To lost time, old oceanic secrets.
Along the water's edge, in pattern casual
As the pattern of the stars, the pin-point air-holes
Left by the sand-flea under the receding spume,
Wink and blink out again. A gull drifts over,
Wide wings crucified against the sky--
His shadow travels the shore, upon its margins
You will find his signature: one long line,
Two shorter lines curving out from it, a nearly
Perfect graph of the bird himself in flight.
His footprint is his image fallen from heaven.

So - can you picture the area and time I grew up in? To give credit to where I finally found these poems so I could show you the whole verse instead of little snippets I could remember I thank

What is on my computer desktop

This is a picture I have had on my computer for awhile - I love watching the boats and people fishing at the inlet - I enjoy it almost as much as actually fishing at the inlet.

Thanks guernseygal This will be a fun meme.

OOPS - it is blue again isn't it -- I guess I see a real theme in my life going on here - maybe I should just give up and go with my love of blue and stop trying to bring other colors into my life :D

Picture heavy post

Or how I spent my winter vacation -- I can't figure out how to post by each picture so you will have to forgive me -
Picture 1 is a manatee eating and resting in the shade - where I was happy to be in the heat also
#2 is a new way to surf - no waves needed
#3 after surfing we get to splash the audience
#4 is in the wrong place as it was near the end of the show
#5 incredible divers who were lifted back up to the platform by a rope lift that they put their hands thru - if you click on the picture you can see the trapezee artists in the picture too.....
#6 the flying bird lady
#7 can we dance
#8 HI my name is Shamu
#9 how wet can we get the audience
#10 this is closer to the edge maybe it will get even more wet
#11 Why don't people pay attention to where it says "Soak Zone" I still don't get why so many seemed surprised when they got "SOAKED"
#12 waving good bye
#13 I kept expecting them to burst into song and dance like the movie "Happy Feet"
and #14 the best picture of the whole trip --when we left home the gas was $2.55 and when we got home it was $2.59 I thought that $1.93 was picture worthy :D

I truly am the worst photographer in the world but these turned out pretty good considering I was holding the camera to my right and just trying to line it up with the action and click it fast enough to get the picture. I'm pretty happy with them...

Jo tell your hubby to be kind :D ......

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing. I'm trying to figure out how to post the vacation pics so this is a part of my setting it up

I swear I will post pictures from Vacation

it has been crazed since we got back -- MIL had a few episodes over the past couple of nights so we were over there getting her calmed down and meds into her (she decides we are all trying to poison her during these - so we have to get her out of the rage then get the meds in - fun) I am so glad I have knitting to bring with me- still using my shrug as my mindless knitting for times like this...

Today I am making a white bean with garlic soup found on Rachael Ray site - since last night hubby promised some to the caregiver and to mom -- hopefully I will get it mostly done before Knitting Circle (that I have missed for about a month - I miss my group....)

back from vacation

but no vacation post just yet - instead I did a quiz and got this result

Your Winter Look is Casual

You go for warmth and comfort, yet still manage to look great

and while I will agree with the warmth and comfort part -- I don't know about the look great part LOL

Once I get the camera in from the car and the cables to download the pictures I will do a vacation post...

So I got my battery for my pedometer

and it is up and running -- it only took 3 stores to get it - I tried to give the business to our nephew who owns a camera store - but those batteries were used in old cameras not the new ones -- also a friend with an eye glass/hearing aid shop - but those batteries wouldn't last long in the pedometer. Final Stop --- Radio Shack - they had it . . . oh well, think of the extra steps I took right?

Just a couple hours of getting ready to go today and we are off in the morning. I'm actually using the lists I made for this - what a change from my normal making lists and putting them aside.

I have to find time to wind up some yarn for the trip -- some sock yarn and some yarn for a shawl. I am also working on my mindless shrug pattern (that I am making up as I go- easy peasy as long as I remember my decreases and where to make them - since I seem to have misplaced my notes on how I started out) -- And I have a bunch of books to read. And money, credit cards and travelers checks - I think I am ready for anything :D

Stupid Pedometer

I wore it all today - and walked about 4 miles in all my running around -- and got home to look at what the exact number was and it wasn't working -- I have to replace the battery I guess. Well at least I can look for a battery tomorrow. But Dang!!!!

I am thrilled that I was able to get in to see the chiropractor where I used to work so I can get my neck adjusted - hopefully one adjustment will be enough - but no matter what it has to feel better than it has been feeling the past 2 days. So tomorrow at 11:30 I will be being "cracked" as my hubby calls it.

testing new blogger

Just switched over and I am trying to see what the heck I got into - And I have to try to put my buttons on the sidebar and I have no idea what to do with that so it may take me awhile to get that done. I did save a copy of the template on what was on my blog before so maybe I can manage

Runagogo!

Rachael has set up a blog for everyone doing the 100 miles by 4/1/07 Here go join in - I think it is going to be a lot of fun and a great way to get up and do a bit of exercise.

I will be keeping track of my steps while we are away and posting when we get back since I won't be taking the laptop with me. So I will have lots to catch up with by then.

Off to look for more warm weather clothes to wash and freshen up for packing - oh what to bring - cold clothes, mild clothes, and warm weather clothes -- I am not a clothes horse - you would think this would be easy for me wouldn't you?

My non-New Years Resolution

I'm not a huge fan of New Years Resolutions but this seemed fun and maybe a way to motivate me to walk more. And by walking more I would be accomplishing most anything else that could/would have been on my resolution list - other than organizing my life better (which is a perpetual resolution that may actually take sometime)

So I joined 100 miles by April 1st in my case it will be walking not running though. I am hoping that I will get a good bit of it done on vacation - where I will have to remember to put my pedometer on everyday and to record the steps. A good question I was asked but didn't think to put here earlier (thanks CPAKnits)- it is 2,000 steps to a mile if you are using a pedometer.

Now to go and try to remember how to put the button on my sidebar.

It has been so long since I was tagged

for this that I don't remember the rules sorry - but here are my weird things--

1) I cannot sit with my back exposed in a public place like a restaurant. If I end up in that position I keep turning around to see what is behind me - I actually have a weird sensation on my back --- Hubby swears I was a gambler in a past life who was shot in the back at a table.

2) I make lists - lists of lists even -- do I do what is on the list NOOOOO but I have the list for it.

3) I also read --- a lot. I usually have 3 paper books going in the house one or two on the computer, along with magazines, newspapers, and also a book or two in each car and one in my bag along with my knitting... for "just in case"

4) I love fish and I love smoked food but smoked fish makes me gag. However - I love smoking fish for other people.

5) My body temperature is weird -- it is usually around 94 degrees then it suddenly jumps up to 100 or 101 -- it is rare that it is anywhere near what is considered normal - which drives my doctors nuts at times. They keep saying "How do you feel? Are you feeling sick" and I keep telling them no more than usual.

6) My memory sucks - I can't remember names or dates to save my life - but I am great at Jeopardy. I guess my brain is full of mainly useless information from all the books I read.

Now I honestly can't think of anything else that is odd about me - but I am sure if you asked anyone who knows me they could come up with a list a mile long. It just means I don't think anything else is odd about me - not that it isn't odd hehehe

We had our New Years traditional Lobster dinner and are sitting here now getting ready to watch some DVDs until midnight - will toast the New Years in if hubby stays awake long enough - but since we have been running for 3 days I really doubt he will make it (me, I will be up until 2 or 3 no matter what) And we are listening to the scanner with all the calls for the drunks on the road (already at 8:30 pm), the fights and domestic incidents and the suicidal people (2 so far in the last 6 hours) and I am very verry happy to be in my cozy home and in a few minutes in my cozy comfy pj's instead of out among all of those things. Does this mean we are getting old?

Happy New Year and Healthy New Year to everyone!!

Looking on the positive side

that this happened this week so it can get fixed before we go to Florida - but still .... CRAP!!

I was going to knitting circle and stopped at MIL's on the way to drop off some seafood chowder and a water bottle for her to drink from (she is having problems holding a glass straight when she goes to drink from it and spills and she is having problems chewing and swallowing so soup is good for her now) and of course the water bottle rolls off the seat and between the seat and the passenger side door - - I run around the car to get the bottle and soup out and open the door and the door won't close!!!! I locked it, unlocked it - using the remote then using the key and nothing -- the piece that holds the door shut is stuck and now the door hits the bar and won't close -- I tried using a pliers to grab it and move it - no go .... so I am home now -- called to say I wouldn't make it to circle and wishing R. hadn't taken his truck to a friends house when they left for Rhode Island today. I literally drove home with a shopping bag looped over the inside door handle holding it across the seat to keep the door shut (which I figured out after the door opened as I was driving)

We actually have an appointment to get the car checked over, and any thing needed done to it and the inspection done on Sat. - so like I said it is good it happened now and not half way to Florida.... but still.... CRAP!

I was tagged with the 6 weird thing meme - and am still working on what exactly I want to reveal about me that is weird but maybe not too weird -- and there is just too much to choose from too. :D

Knitters are amazing

Go to the Yarn Harlot blog and check out how the Knitters without Borders are doing in the donations to Knitters without Borders. Since Friday night she has raised over $80,000 dollars for them - I am putting the banner on my blog now that I have made a donation to this worthy cause.

My eye doctor is one of the doctors who has done lots of work with this group and now I can feel that I made a small contribution at least.

Seriously though - see what knitters have done as a group - donating to this cause, knitting for charities (Dulaan, Warm up America, Prayer Shawls, caps for preemies etc) and be amazed.

So many times I have thought what can I do by myself that would make a difference in the world and feel that I have no power - then I see what we, as a group, have done and I realize that knitters are a force to be reckoned with. Imagine what we could do if we had some knitters in major political offices pulling us all together. We could run the world bwahahaha.....

Thank You Stephanie for opening my eyes to the possibilities of group participation for change.

A walk down memory lane

Jo (of Celtic Memory Yarn) wrote in her blog some memories of horseback riding as a child. That brought back some fun memories of my childhood and horses and fun fun fun. Now I never had a horse of my own -but so many of my friends did - and some of them even lived in the city during the week so I got to exercise their horses.

We had scavenger hunts on horseback for birthday parties, we rode in parades, we went to gymkhanas and one of the moms made matching outfits for some of the pair events (like relay races with eggs on spoons), we played broomstick polo, played knights by holding long sticks and spearing small rings suspended over the course (much safer than actual jousting that we originally thought of doing), we did Bonac Pole bending - a seriously sick game - you rode like a bat out of hell weaving in and out of telephone poles and mailboxes trying to get as close as possible to them (any wonder I have lousy knees now) We would ride double and bareback on one horse down the field and turn quickly at the end and try to stay on - now don’t think we were being cruel to poor Playboy - he would do this to us on a regular basis (make 90 degree turns trying to make us fall off) we just found a way to have fun with the psycho horse. This is the same horse that stepped on my foot while squeezing me against a fence - he owed me some fun LOL

We would ride thru the woods to go to another beach - and to this day to get to those beaches on the road I would have to have a map but thru the woods I knew the trails like the back of my hand (now there are probably 300 houses along the length of those trails)

And if we weren’t on horses or chatting in tack rooms we were riding our bikes to the beaches or taking a boat out from Uncle George's (where the hoses were kept) to go clamming and fishing and swimming.

But Jo I never had the experience of clambering up an embankment and doing a terror filled slide down the other side. Damn this girl would have been doing some major praying on the way down for sure.

So Jo thanks for the walk down memory lane - it was grand fun.

So tomorrow will be turkey with the in-laws and Sat. I will be cooking the free turkey I got from King Kullen for us - we should be turkeyed out soon don’t you think - the main turkey meal, turkey sandwiches, turkey pot pie, hot turkey sandwiches, all finished with turkey soup from the carcass - I just love turkey :D

misc. stuff today

which shows I am not 100% yet but I am not lying in bed in a fetal position so we have progress. Tomorrow I will do shopping that I have needed to do for a week (hubby shopped for basics in the meantime) and I AM going to go to knitting circle for a while at least.

here is my quiz result

What Color is Your Brain?

ORANGE:

At work or in school: I need to be "hands on": I like to play games, to compete, and to perform. I enjoy flexibility, changes of pace, and variety. I have difficulty with routine and structure. My favorite subjects are music, art, theatre, and crafts. I often excel in sports. I like solving problems in active ways and negotiating for what I want. I can be direct and like immediate results.
With friends: Planning ahead bores me because I never know what I want to do until the moment arrives. I like to excite my friends with new and different things, places to go, and romantic moments.
With family: I need a lot of space and freedom. I want everyone to have fun. It is hard for me to follow rules, and I feel we should all just enjoy one another.

and while I really am surprised that it was orange I have to agree with much of what it says well actually most of what it says especially the more negative stuff.

Thurs is going to be really odd for me - I usually cook Thanksgiving and plan it and bring it to MIL's house - this year the kids (niece, nephew and spouses) decided they wanted us to all chip in and buy dinner (for $200 it had best be a fantastic meal - oh what I could do with $200 for the meal) Saying they didn't want to heat up babci's (you should see the choices spell check comes up with for that lol) house since it is already hot there -- but I always cooked the turkey, etc. at my house and brought it over - the only thing actually cooked there were the potato and veggies - Oh well. I think I will still get my free turkey to cook over the weekend for the two of us - so we can have the smell of turkey in the house and my stuffing and have lots of leftovers and a carcass for soup later.

Not the KR Retreat yet

just a quick quiz that I took that was right on for me ....

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Northeast

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

The Inland North
Philadelphia
The Midland
The South
Boston
The West

The main reason no blog on the retreat yet is I am in a huge fibro flare - pain to the point of wanting to lie in bed in a fetal position and just rock back and forth until it ends. But I keep saying it was so worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat so I guess that tells you I really enjoyed myself there at least.

But as bad as the pain is right now I don't wnat to go to the doctors for pain meds since I would much rather save that for our trip to Florida in January. But know that I am cursing out the frigging government for thinking it has a right to stick its nose in between doctors and patients when it comes to pain meds. I never went over my alloted amount and it just allowed me to have some quality of life with pain in the mid range instead of the high range. Now I feel like a criminal when I just want to have less pain. Arrgghh
I'll go back to my book now...and I have to work myself up to go to the store tomorrow since I have nothing in the house at all...
